It’s in the early 1200s. Norway has been Christianized, but the compassion is hard to find. A Queen murders a King. Brothers are betraying each other. Houses are being burned down. Innocent people are being slaughtered. An army has been given orders to kill a little boy. A possible future King.

When the Swedish widowed Queen Margareta poisons the birch leg King Håkon Sverrisson people are under the assumption that he was the last remaining blood relative from the holy King Olav. On his deathbed he reveals that there is an heir, the little boy child Håkon, whom he conceived with his mistress Inga from Varteig. Unfortunately Gisle Brorsson is the only one present when the King dies. Gisle wants, together with Inge Bårdsson, to rule the birch legs, and keeps this information to himself. Gisle assists the murderer Margareta out of the country, but withholds her beautiful daughter Kristin against her will. He does not inform his own people, buttellsthe birch legs archenemy and the Church’s brutal men,the baglers, about the three years old heir Håkon Håkonsson.
